All Kashmir Carpets are hand woven by tying knots on the warp strands. There are different types of knots used in carpet weaving mostly symmetrical and asymmetrical, the latter being the most commonly used one. Knot density is a traditional measure for quality of handmade or knotted pile carpets. It refers to the number of knots, or knot count, per unit of surface area - typically per square inch (KPSI). Number of knots per unit area is directly proportional to the quality of carpet. KPSI (Knots per Square Inch) is measured on the reverse side of a hand knotted carpet. Individual Knots are counted 1" vertically, and 1" horizontally, then multiplied together to arrive at the Knots per Square Inch. Knot density (for strength) and fineness (for clear design definition) are important indicators of quality.
